Called both a philosopher and the smartest man in the Senate, Senator John Sununu (R-NH) followed his father’s footsteps into political office and served as the youngest member of the United States Senate. Before entering public service, Sununu worked in the then emerging high-tech field as an engineer and a small-businessman. He later put his expertise to work for the country, serving on Senate committees such as Commerce, Finance, Banking, and Foreign Relations. Drawing from his engineering and business background, Sununu speaks passionately and in great detail about the economic landscape, and financial and regulatory reform, the science of and the economic impact of climate change, and technological change.
Known for his fiscally conservative views and work to reform the regulation of financial institutions, Sununu currently serves as one of five panel members responsible for the oversight of TARP funds and is writing a report on regulatory reform, mortgage issuance, and insurance regulation.
Sununu first served the state of New Hampshire in the House of Representatives where he won some high-profile appointments during his congressional tenure. He put his past budget experience in private industry to work on the House Appropriations Committee, and in 2001 House Speaker Dennis Hastert named him to be vice chairman of the Budget Committee.
During his term in the Senate, Sununu passed legislation to reform financial giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that changed the regulatory structure. He negotiated the internet tax ban and fought for the addition of civil liberties into the PATRIOT act.
Well respected by Republicans and Democrats alike, Sununu is a refreshingly funny and brilliant speaker with a pro-business perspective. He speaks with enthusiasm and expertise about the policies and issues most relevant to the business community.
Sen. Sununu holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard.
